Lest we forget

This weekend it is only right to remember the sacrifice of others and to recall the contribution our area made, particularly during World War 2. Tangmere was not the only RAF airfield, there was also RAF Selsey. Meanwhile, Bracklesham and East Wittering were pivotal in the rehearsals for D/Day;  there were an awful lot of service people who were garrisoned and billeted here as well. If you have not visited the Royal British Legion website, please do.

We are all living longer lives, in part because of their sacrifice. As we become increasingly less young, our own mortality can become ever more of a passing thought. Whilst you probably are aware that life expectancy in the South of England is generally higher than it is in the North, did you realise the variation across our District. Then, there is the prospect of a cold winter which the BBC are tracking and apparently believe that near the end of the month, we might see atmospheric conditions that could be a prelude to another ‘Beast from the East.’

An update on Parliament and the pumping of raw sewage - the government amendment passed on Monday states: “A sewerage undertaker whose area is wholly or mainly in England must secure a progressive reduction in the adverse impact of discharges from the undertaker’s storm overflows … reducing adverse impacts on the environment, and reducing adverse impacts on public health.” There is criticism it does not go far enough because in 2020, water companies released raw sewage into rivers more than 400,000 times over a total of 3.1m hours (and apparently ours are some of the dirtiest.)

CDC’s latest campaign to support local unsurprisingly has a festive focus. Businesses can apply for a special marketing pack here. There are parking incentives to support the campaign including buy two hours and get a third free in most CDC car parks when you use the MiPermit app. There is also free parking after 4pm in the Avenue de Chartres car park for the Chichester Christmas Light Switch On event on Saturday 27 November, and for the Chichester late night shopping on 2, 9, 16 and 23 December. There are also recycled wrapping paper and gift tags tailored for the city and each of our towns, which local businesses can give away free when people buy from them.

This coming week, I have CDC’s Overview & Scrutiny Committee and the Governance Task & Finish group. Donna, has a slightly less heavy week, meeting wise, which will help her catch up with the ward work.

As an aside- In case you had not realised, you can buy pizzas from vending machines in Chichester! What is the world coming to?!

And finally: -

As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
