International Appeal

We want to begin by thanking those of you who make the time to read our blog when you are abroad. Our last post had a reader in Spain, two in Sweden and a lady in the US, who messaged me from Chichester, Pennsylvania. We network with other hyper-locals in the UK (remember there are 349 registered local Groups) but have not thought about other countries, so. If you come across any potentials, please let us know.

Whilst talking about forging links, Donna and I pop over to the Isle of Wight quite a lot, and have previously mentioned that hunger is an increasing concern everywhere, particularly when children are on holiday and no longer get a free lunch. In Ventnor one cafe took action in readiness for the recent Half Term. You may have read that Food Banks fear a surge in demand they may not be able to meet this Summer. (according to Sky News one already has) Don't forget you can help by getting in touch with local orgnisations like Selsey’s Full Up or play a part in Tea for Trussell.

What do you think of the condition of our County’s roads? I have come across more than one pothole over the years on my extended commute, and, in all honesty, wish I had not (for the sake of my car!) If you have had a similar experience, it may be comforting to read a visitor’s view of the roads in East Sussex. If you have a provisional licence,  Chichester is apparently the third best place to learn to drive

If you are getting fed up with driving, or might be interested in learning how you could cut back on your car use, July is Going Car Free month

Turning to nature, firstly with a subject close to Donna’s heart, hedgehog highways. There is a petition on change.org as their species is in serious trouble. Secondly, we make no secret that we prefer Brownfield development to green, and have been arguing for it to take greater priority at CDC. Another petition I wish to draw your attention to is calling for a ban on development on agricultural land to increase food self-sufficiency.

June 16 is World Refill Day. This is a global campaign to prevent plastic pollution and help people live with less waste. It is run by UK charity, City to Sea. The campaign is designed to accelerate the transition away from single-use plastic and towards reuse systems, including through the use of the Refill app. Refill connects people to places they can eat, drink and shop without the pointless packaging.

Culture Spark is inviting young people between the ages of 16–25 to take part in a new TikTok challenge to create a short video expressing what culture means to them. The competition runs until 30 June. To take part, you need to submit a portrait video one to two minutes long. Prizes include a £100 iTunes voucher; a free annual membership for Everyone Active Leisure Centres; two tickets to Chichester Festival Theatre shows; and the chance to take part in a Pallant House Gallery workshop. Find out more by emailing Veronika.

We recently shared information about one of the latest projects to be launched by the Police and Crime Commissioner, a new app aimed at helping people if they feel unsafe outside of their home. ‘Safe Space Sussex’ shows you the nearest registered safe space where you can go to feel more comfortable, and a friendly face will help you to contact someone you know. Businesses are being asked to offer to help provide spaces.

Under the Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse, CDC is responsible for keeping highways and public areas clean. This includes the removal of litter, detritus and fly tipped waste, but it does not require the removal of graffiti and flyposting. Instead, it recommends local agencies work together on an agreed approach. CDC is allocating £30,000 to tackle the latter through a targeted, 12-month removal campaign. Information will be collected about hot spots, common themes, and repeat offenders, which will be shared with the police and other agencies.

Finally: -

As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
