And the living is...
Would you like to try out a favourably priced, quiet spot on the Peninsula whose profits go to a good cause? We popped over to The Apuldram Centre again this week because it is a wonderful charity which assists members of our communities who need a bit of extra support. Apart from a lovely cafe, there are home grown veggies and beautiful flowers. You can sit out and let the world pass by, then on the way home stop off at Apuldram Roses or its neighbour Dell Quay PYO (or both!) I should add, for the benefit of cat lovers, that Marley scooped a trophy at the 2022 National Awards. Marley is the Apuldram cat.
If you like walking, horse riding or cycling, these suggestions from WSCC might prove helpful.
In the heat you might like this shaded walk.
Recently we lost Bernard Cribbins, at a time when one of his 1970s TV shows seems to have been quite prophetic - in tribute to him, and because we are all increasingly realising the benefits of the Womble message, I thought you might like to read an opinion piece to that effect.
Petition time - this call to allow teacher assessed grades for teenagers with cancer who miss their exams touched me greatly, partly because I am a teacher, and partly because I have a daughter who has had to overcome a lot; unapologetically I quote part of its introduction:
"My daughter was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia on the 11th of March 2022. She had completed the majority of the GCSE syllabus for her chosen subjects. She started chemotherapy on the 14th of March and also spent 16 days in intensive care. She has completed 2 rounds out of 4 rounds of chemotherapy and has only spent 6 nights at home since her diagnosis. My daughter has sat two full sets of mock exams under exam conditions and had 100% attendance before her diagnosis."
Romance scams involve people being duped into sending money to criminals who go to great lengths to gain their trust and convince them that they are in a genuine relationship. In West Sussex April 2022 – June 2022 of those scams reported an estimated total of £193,690 was lost to romance fraud with the most common payment method bank transfer (41%) and most common contact method WhatsApp (26%) followed by the dating site (21%). Be suspicious of any requests for money from someone you have never met in person, particularly if you have only recently met online; speak to your family or friends to get advice. Remember profile photos may not be genuine, so do your research first; performing a reverse image search on a search engine can find photos that have been taken from somewhere, or someone. If you think you have been a victim of a romance scam contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud.
Returning to education, WSCC are recruiting minibus drivers and passenger assistants in time for the return to school. WSCC are also asking residents to "Think Before You Throw" this summer, as we all try to make sure the right items end up in the recycling. They know that the majority of residents recycle, and recycle right, but there are still some items that people are unsure on - like saucepans, or plastic film.
The work goes on, even though meetings tail off in August. We have been finishing the delivery of the Selsey Town Council consultation to find out residents’ views on the recent Jubilee Jamboree, and more widely whether residents prefer them to give grants to help groups stage events, or would prefer to potentially pay higher Council Tax for the Council to stage events itself. Earlier today Donna and I visited the Tenchley Manor Nursing Home Open Afternoon in time to be entertained by the Selsey Shantymen.
Donna has recently seen a significant increase in residents who are finding themselves in housing crisis, and is helping them in their quest to be rehoused. There is an appalling lack of properties in both the social and private sectors, with our residents invariably having to be rehoused in the northern part of the district. It’s extremely sad but there is really no alternative at present.
On a more personal note, Heidi, our house bunny, has her own Instagram page now. As Donna explained earlier this week, Heidi is on a quest to be 'insta' famous. She didn't have a good start in life, so would be extremely chuffed for a follow and the odd 'like'.
Finally: -
As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
Tim
