The Heat is on again
The 6 weeks of Summer are more than half gone already so unsurprisingly we are reaching results days, with Thursday being A Levels; like us, I am sure you want to wish students good luck with their results, and hope they allow them to 'follow their dreams.'
If you fancy a change, or a de-stress (before those A Level results?), one of my mother's favourite places was the New Forest. We have been a few times too, mainly to spot a pony or two: each time we go, we resolve to come back more often, but never quite do. In case you have never been, or have not done so for a while, here is an article about Beaulieu (Village) to inform / remind you.
In the other direction is one of the UK's safest seaside towns.
The noticeably hot weather is back, so please remember that it can affect your health. The people most likely to be affected are the elderly, the very young, and people with pre-existing medical conditions. If you know or look after someone that may be susceptible to the effects of this hot weather period please help make sure that they stay cool and well, and if possible check in advance that they are prepared for this hot spell: -
Shut windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. If it's safe, open them for ventilation when it is cooler.
Avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don't go out between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day).
Keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn't possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make the room hotter).
Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water.
Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and fruit juice. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol.
Plan ahead to make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications you need.
Identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go to keep cool.
Wear loose, cool clothing and a hat if you go outdoors.
The RSPCA are reminding us not to leave dogs alone in cars. The Great British staycation is here to stay, with up to 30 million Brits expected to holiday in the UK in 2022. And it's likely many of us will be taking our four-legged friends along. But dogs aren't welcome everywhere, so they are urging you to plan your outings carefully. A little forward thinking could save your dogs from heatstroke this summer.
Should the weather break before the school holidays are over, there's always the library service.
You might have missed this story, which reveals that the Government is making contingency plans for energy blackouts in January; if you can remember the 1970s, I suspect you will probably lay in a supply of candles as a precaution.
I have recently been remembering my time as a driving school owner, back in the day, because I have been out with my daughter who is learning to drive. This article also brought back memories because one of my instructors taught Nicholas Lyndhurst to drive, which was why for much of Only Fools and Horses his character Rodney never did.
Many thanks to those of you who are following Heidi, our house bunny, who has her own Instagram page now. Heidi is on a quest to be 'insta' famous. She didn't have a good start in life so, if you have not done so yet, please give her a follow and the odd 'like'.
