The Water of Life

We want to start this week by thanking the resident who got in touch via our Twitter account to discuss one of the petitions we shared last week. We also wish to apologise to any of you who feel, like another resident, that sharing support links is political: we are independent and not registered for Parliamentary elections, but we feel there is an onus on us to keep you informed of what is available, and you can decide what you read.

As I grew up my paternal grandmother told me her family heated bricks to keep themselves warm when she was a child. That would have been over 100 years ago. I learnt this week, that a lady in Nottinghamshire is doing the same by heating them (dry) in the oven as she cooks to save on heating: -

This week's petition calls for people in financial hardship to not be prosecuted for not paying their TV licence during the cost of living crisis.

You may have heard there are two new Covid variants that could be vaccine resistant.

However, it has also been shown that there is a link between symptoms and number of jabs.

At the onset of Covid, I joined the Zoe health study. When in-person schooling resumed after the first lockdown, my then Year 11s were fascinated by its geographical cases distribution charts, and spotted the upward trend in cases that preceded the second lockdown.

I am currently taking part in a large study the Zoe Health Study is conducting into Intermittent Fasting; it runs for 3 weeks. Week 1 coincided with Half Term, and involved me eating at times of my choosing, logging my daily hunger, mood and energy levels as well as the times I first and last ate. Being back at school has proven more of a challenge because in Week 2 I have to contain eating within a 10-hour period: my commute home means we often don't eat until after 7pm, but the day starts at 8.30am, with break not until 11am. It is early days, but I think I might feel better than when my eating spanned 12 or more hours.

Last week we shared an article by Professor Tim Spector of Zoe which is worth sharing again because it contains some useful advice on how we can be healthier whilst saving energy and helping our planet.

Keeping with health matters, a walk in less clement weather may be good too.

Last month was Stoptober but it's never too late to give up.

The Government has announced the continuation of the Household Support Fund until the end of March 2023.

If you can spare the time, Age UK are seeking volunteers.

Last week we shared an article revealing our most oversubscribed Secondary schools - these are the Primaries.

WSCC has launched The Safe Clubs for Children campaign to support parents and carers with advice and guidance on out of school activities.

Do you know what your rights are if you are a working carer? As part of #CarersRightsDay later this month the @CarersWSussex website has a list of online events being held on topics such as wellbeing, benefits and rights for unpaid carers in the workplace.

We are a team as you know, but sometimes the volume of news from WSCC and CDC can shine the light on just Donna and myself; this week it was a pleasure for Donna to be able to highlight the support other councillors give us. Cllr. Val Weller stepped into the breach when Donna needed to get to Emsworth for a Chichester Harbour Conservancy meeting.

Donna and Val were also at the Academy in Selsey for a meeting today - we hope to bring you more news of that very soon.

Sitting on Chichester Harbour Conservancy is one of Donna's roles for WSCC. She was particularly pleased to be offered it because of our proximity to Pagham. Chichester, Pagham and Langstone are all extremely important, as is Medmerry in terms of biodiversity and ecological value. There is no doubt that climate change, the presence of nitrates, micro plastics and even some of the ingredients from moisturisers and antibacterial  hand wash are impacting the 'balance' of the harbours. Fortunately, we now understand the impact but the challenge is, of course, to reverse the damage.

In terms of upcoming events, on Saturday 19th November, Selsey First Responders have a Christmas Fair in Selsey Town Hall. The Friends of Selsey Medical Centre, who you may remember have guest posted here before, will be there with a few items to sell & Membership Forms in the hope to collect new members. They hope you will call in & browse the various stalls & maybe drop a donation in their bucket.

In December, East Street and North Street in Chichester city centre will be abuzz with festive cheer once more as CDC welcomes the return of the Christmas Market from the beginning of December. It will feature an array of stalls offering an exciting range of quirky and quality gifts, beautiful artwork, handmade crafts, and seasonal and specialty food and drinks stands, offering festive delights to enjoy as you browse or at home.

Finally: -

As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.

Tim
