a view to drive for

This week I wish to thank one of our highly valued Independent traders who urged us to stand again in May, a fellow long distance commuter I bumped into when we were both grabbing a coffee very early one morning and a local window cleaner who greeted me as I was out and about, and it turns out is a former student of the school I teach in.

Many of you continue to welcome the Peninsula’s zero strategic housing allocations in CDC’s new Local Plan and its commitment to "Reinforcing the role of the Manhood Peninsula as a home to existing communities, tourism and agricultural enterprise." Regular readers will know that this is a vindication of the arguments we have been making about the effects of climate change, overstretched infrastructure and the negative impact on our tourism and agricultural dependent economy.

Inspect the Local Plan here, which is out to consultation until March 17.

There is also a live consultation about developing an Acute Stroke Centre at St Richard’s.

You might also be interested in another medical item - there is a Heart attack warning as one 'dismissed' symptom is more common in women.

It is Half Term so Full Up in Selsey will be open Monday 13 - Friday 17 February. Text 07852506923 to book. CDC are also arranging a free laser extravaganza show at the Canal Basin in Chichester on 17 and 18 February, running two 20-minute shows set to music at 6pm and 7.30pm. Lastly, here are some other local suggestions from The Great Sussex Way (formerly Visit Chichester.)

If you drive a lot, or have driven for many years, you may well have taken in some of the breathtaking views in different parts of the country. My oldest brother lived near Buxton in Derbyshire for many years. You may know it for its spring water; without wishing to deter you from buying it, there was a free fountain in the centre last time I was there a few years ago. As I drive a lot, and have done so for many years, this article interested me because I have driven along several of these roads including the West Sussex road named among country's most scenic in the UK.

Our District has some of the strongest Roman links out of anywhere in Britain because we were where they landed. Obviously, Fishbourne Roman Palace and Bignor Roman Villa are. Well known, but what do you know about Stane Street - a road which connected Chichester to London?

In other news, WSCC are offering free access for 12 months to a new digital weight management service, Gro Health, for people who live or work in West Sussex. Meanwhile, CDC has joined more than 40 councils across the South East to hold Southern Water to account over pollution and infrastructure failings. The group was set up in response to issues including flooding; sewage backing up into people’s homes, gardens and roads; the ongoing problem of discharges into rivers and waterways; and the inability to deal with additional development. The meeting was held on Tuesday 31 January when the group discussed action and experiences to date across the full Southern Water network. As you know, Southern Water is responsible for wastewater across the region and for drinking water in other parts of the southeast.

CDC has written to some residents in Selsey about the Emergency Works we welcomed last week, following significant wall movement and subsequent material loss from behind the seawall:

  • Filling voids beneath the apron slabs

  • Raising the steel sheet pile toe

  • Encasing the existing apron with concrete.

Work is due to commence on the 14th of February. The first step will be to fill the voids beneath the slabs, this is expected to take two–four days. Work will then pause and recommence on the 27th of February. The working hours will be between 7 am – 7 pm, with work occurring for approximately six hours each day around the low tide. There will be a one week on, one week off work pattern, due to the tide times. Occasionally, there may be a need to work outside of these hours. Access to the beach will be restricted during this time. There is the potential for heavier traffic at the end of West Street during the works.

Finally: -

As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.

Tim
