Welcome to our last blog this month, which means that 2024 is already going quite quickly. This blog is being published the day before this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day on Saturday January 27, so whenever you read it, and thank you for doing so, we urge you to spare a little time to read more here . The Selsey sea defences recommendation, to apply for a grant to undertake an extensive study into future proofing solutions that might better safeguard 1300 homes here, was approved by Full CDC on Tuesday: Jonathan Brown (Liberal Democrat), the Deputy Leader, described it as the single biggest action CDC could take to mitigate the impact of Climate Change. I welcomed it on all our behalf and pointed out that as our District struggles to find land for houses, we could not afford to lose as many as 1300 homes. CDC’s coastal engineering service, Coastal Partners, has carried out early feasibility work that highlighted more than 700 properties are at tidal flood risk. This number is pre...

Welcome to our third blog of 2024, and thank you for taking the time to have a read. Unfortunately, Monday was Blue Monday, the day each year when historically absence from work is at its highest. Last Tuesday Donna was back in the Chair for CDC’s pivotal Overview & Scrutiny Committee at which our Police Commissioner finally answered questions - Ms Bourne cancelle...

There is always speculation about just how much rain or snow we might get; but I think it is heightened this year because the Peninsula has a high water table and is noticeably saturated, so it does not take much more to cause significant problems. Many of us value our beaches and are concerned about how clean their water actually is. Sewage outflows are therefore a particular worry. The Environment Agency carefully monitors water quality and rates each beach in terms of the quality of its bathing water. Did you know that one of our County’s beaches has been given a zero rating for the second year running and people are advised not to swim in its waters as a result? This article lists the current EA verdict on Sussex's beaches .  This has been a very busy week at school, with meetings and / or additional classes every day after school. I...
