June 21, 2024

Welcome to this week's blog. As always, thank you for sparing the time to have a read. The summer holidays are approaching so please let people know that now is the time to book for WSCC's Holiday Activities & Food programme

I have been stopped several times this week and thanked for Selsey Town Council’s D-day celebration. There is drone footage of it on YouTube, as STC posted: -

Watch Selsey's commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of D-Day on 6 June 2024 from a unique birds-eye perspective!. Immerse yourself in the homage to Selsey's brave residents and visiting service members during the lead-up to and on D-Day. Through photographs taken in the era, be transported back to a time when our small village showed remarkable resilience and spirit. Don't miss this chance to honour their enduring legacy and bravery that shaped history. Watch the film now and share in the pride of Selsey!”

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) have released a Food Alert advising businesses to remove from the market meat and meat products supplied by the cutting plant Block and Cleaver in Swanley, Kent, because of food safety concerns. These products may have incorrect use by dates, are subject to traceability breaches, may not have been manufactured in accordance with food safety management systems and may be unsafe. They should not be eaten. WSCC Trading Standards are asking food businesses such as restaurants, cafes and hotels to withdraw from sale immediately any meat or meat products supplied by Block and Cleaver because they are unsafe to eat. Products should be disposed of safely. They are also asking food businesses who have sold meat or meat products at retail, directly to consumers, to undertake product recalls and inform them

Although meetings are affected by purdah during the General Election campaign, on Wednesday morning Val and Donna had CDC’s Development Planning and Infrastructure Panel then in the evening Val was joined by Mick, Ali, Ian, Andrew and Gareth for STC’s Planning before the rest of us joined them for Full STC. Donna also had several West Sussex meetings across the week including the Health and Adult Social Care Committee.

This coming week you can see our Green colleague, Tim Young, on Monday at CDC’s Environment Panel and Donna on Wednesday at CDC’s Grants & Concessions Panel. Watch CDC’s public meetings here, and Full WSCC here

The agenda for the meeting of Sussex Police & Crime Panel on 28 June has been published.

A reminder that Donna and I are going to a service of thanksgiving for our District’s Food Banks at 3pm on Sunday June 30, in the Cathedral, which is open to everyone.  Something else that might interest you, is Parham House, is holding The Sussex Steam Rally on July 13 & 14.

If you sometimes feel like the day seems to be passing a little more slowly, you may actually be right: scientists have detected that the Earth’s inner core is moving more slowly which may by a very small amount, lbe lengthening our days. Don’t forget, doctors have issued an urgent health warning to anyone who drinks energy drinks and this is the Food Standard Agency alerts page and NHS advice on E-coli in view of the current outbreak.

Don’t forget you are being asked for your views on the proposed locations for several new EV charge points in our County. You are also welcome to have your say about the draft A27 Chichester Bypass Mitigation SPD Version 2 consultation which is open until July 11. Reference copies are available to view at CDC’s offices in Chichester, the South Downs Centre in Midhurst, and Chichester, Selsey, Petworth, Midhurst and Southbourne libraries.

Looking slightly ahead, CDC’s popular Cross Market & More artisan market and Summer Street Party will return on Sunday 7 July, when both events come together in the city centre for a day of celebration. Running from 10am until 4pm, the Cross Market & More is a mixed street market, celebrating the very best creatives, designers, makers and producers from our District, along with entertainment and family activities. This special artisan market is being held in conjunction with the Summer Street Party, offering a day full of unique shopping experiences, family-friendly activities, free entertainment and local food and drink vendors.

On the day, the city centre will become a hub of activity, with both South Street and West Street closed to traffic making way for an ‘al fresco’ dining area. West Street and Cathedral Green will host free entertainment and attractions especially for children. The day will have a programme of live entertainment with music including various local artists, fashion show, children’s magic performances, face painting, hair braiding, a carousel, trampolines, garden games and a reptile encounter.

CDC is seeking your views on climate change projects as part of a major public consultation taking place from 1 July until 30 September. They will be holding four in-person drop-in events and three online sessions to help people find out more about the consultation. The events will provide the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the proposals with council officers. People will also be able to find out about the work that others are doing to help tackle climate change in the area.

The consultation events will begin with an online session on Monday 1 July from 7pm to 8.30pm. Later that week, the first in-person event will take place at Leconfield Hall in Petworth on Wednesday 3 July from 3pm to 7pm, with people welcome to drop in at any point during this time. Refreshments and a children’s colouring competition activity will be provided at all of the in-person events, and people will also have the opportunity to fill in the council’s online survey and enter a draw to be in with a chance of winning a sustainable living prize worth up to £500. As part of the consultation, people will be asked their opinions on potential projects that could help individuals and communities in our District to reduce their emissions. This information will be used to help inform CDC’s new climate emergency action plan.

Finally: -

As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
