Welcome to this week's blog. As always, thank you for sparing the time to have a read.
On Wednesday Val had CDC’s Licensing Committee then the team had an Extraordinary Full STC. Earlier today, Friday, Donna had Full WSCC. Watch CDC’s public meetings
It is the Sloe Fair this week - one of the earliest recorded fairs in Chichester. It was granted by King Henry I to Ralph de Luffa, Bishop of Chichester and is believed to be named after the Sloe tree which grew in fields by Northgate on the original site. Northgate car park closes at 6am on Saturday 19 October 2024 and reopens at 12 Noon Tuesday 22 October 2024.
That leads us into local Christmas events, starting with the Weald and Downland Museum’s Advent and Christmas Market which is on Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th of November. The following Saturday, November 30th is when many civic Christmas lights will be turned on, particularly on the Peninsula. I am still waiting to find out what East Wittering is doing so, if you know, perhaps you could kindly get in touch. On the 30th, both Selsey’s events take place that afternoon. The High Street will be closed from 12:00 to 19:30 - there'll be a procession, Santa in his grotto, animals and more. The Friends of East Beach, thanks to a grant from Selsey Town Council, have a free grotto and face painter once again. The Grinch has been rumoured to be paying a visit, two Disney Princesses, Aurora and Ariel, and several of Santa's elves are dropping by. If you drive down, there is plenty of parking in East Beach car park.
Walking and roads tend to crop up quite regularly in our posts. Apparently, 10,000 steps a day is no good unless you make yourself puff a little as you can read here, but at the same time, stop / start burns more energy than a continuous stroll. Meanwhile, I was not surprised to learn that drivers judge the A12 in Essex our worst road based on delays and surface condition with the A27 second.
Don’t forget CDC’s new initiative offering free, tailored support and coaching to independent retail and high street businesses in Chichester, East Wittering, Petworth, Midhurst or Selsey, delivered by retail and high streets expert, Clare Bailey, and her team at The Retail Champion. It offers a mentoring package for businesses and tailored action plans focussed on commercial growth.
Autistic people, their families / carers, and professionals working with them are being invited to make our county a better place. WSCC has launched a consultation, including online surveys and in-person workshops, to gather information about people’s needs and their quality of life. The findings will help inform a new autism strategy that aims to improve services and support for autistic adults and children across West Sussex.
From Saturday 7 December, a new exhibition in the Novium, ‘I Grew Up 80s’, is set to provide a colourful trip down memory lane, capturing what the decade was like from a child’s perspective when music was on cassettes, shellsuits and leg warmers were must-haves, and everyone received a Rubik’s Cube for Christmas. The period saw huge developments in science, technology, fashion, entertainment, and the way we interact with each other. The exhibition will explore life before the internet and investigates the shared cultural experience of childhood in the 1980s.
Visitors will find more than 200 items of memorabilia showcasing the youthful exuberance of the decade, from toys such as Care Bears, My Little Pony and Transformers, to album covers of timeless musicians like Queen, George Michael, Phil Collins and Kate Bush. As well as exploring what childhood looked like for their parents, children can explore interactive elements of the exhibition including 80s dress up, trivia questions, games and 1980s themed toys, including many old childhood ‘must-haves’! The exhibition will also feature a vintage Donkey Kong arcade game, which visitors can try their hand at for 50p per play.
Finally: -
As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
