Welcome to this week's blog. As always, thank you for sparing the time to have a read.

This week Donna had CDC’s Corporate Plan task and finish group on Wednesday, and their Housing Strategy group and an Overview and Scrutiny Committee workshop on Thursday. In between, I dropped her off in Sidlesham for a meeting with Sidlesham Parish Councillors and returned her to CDC as I was on Half Term. This coming Monday Val has CDC’s Boundary Review panel which I may be unable to join as its the first day back at school. Meanwhile Donna has a meeting of WSCC’s Governance Committee. On Tuesday Val is hoping to sit in on CDC’s Cabinet and on Wednesday she and Donna have CDC’s Planning. Later that day, Ali, Andrew, Ian, Mike, Donna and I have STC's Finance and Administration group. Watch CDC’s public meetings

The Christmas events are getting close now. The Weald and Downland Museum’s Advent and Christmas Market is on Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th of November. The following Saturday, November 30th, the High Street in Selsey will be closed from 12:00 to 19:30 for a procession, a Santa in his grotto, animals and more. Meanwhile The Friends of East Beach, thanks to a grant from Selsey Town Council, have their free grotto (with the Selsey Lions Club’s Santa) and face painter once again. They have stalls and a funfair as well as the Grinch, Disney Princesses Aurora and Ariel, and several of Santa's elves.

CDC has teamed up with St Wilfrid’s Hospice once again this year to promote their Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme. Collection dates will be 10-13 January 2025 and bookings close on 6 January. Postcodes that they are covering are: PO18, PO19, PO20, PO21, PO22, PO10, GU29, GU28, BN18, and the suggested donation is £15 per tree.

Christmas is a time for family catch ups and lots of hugging. An airport recently limited people to 3 minutes of goodbye hugs which may raise a question of how long should a hug be?

Another interesting read from Forbes (who I have found very informative with A Level business students) reveals average earnings by age group.

We have in previous years discussed whether the clocks should still change or not. Apparently, Churchill Time is being muted once more.

The West Sussex Community Safety & Wellbeing team is working with the charity Railway Children to make our railway stations and the areas around them positive places for rail users, staff and local businesses. Last month they visited Chichester and Barnham stations where they engaged with over 100 people who told them their experiences of using public transport or working at / near the station and gave suggestions for improvements. Based on this feedback they are developing action plans which will see them working in partnership to increase safety measures trackside and refresh signage around the stations including posters displaying local support services and helping to improve the physical environment. For instance, CDC already has plans with Chichester College to refresh the artwork in the station underpass.

CDC is asking businesses whether they have been impacted by climate change; Perhaps they have had to cancel events, had their supply chain disrupted or had to cope with impacts on staff travel. To help businesses prepare for this they are sharing some practical tips in a comfortable setting with lunch provided. In collaboration with sustainability and climate change experts Aethr Associates, CDC is hosting a Free Climate Change Resilience Workshop on 27 November 2024. The workshop will also be supported by West Sussex Business Resilience and Emergency Team.

CDC is also encouraging local community groups, schools, and parish councils once again to apply for funding to help increase the number of community orchards across our District. £9,000 is available for the second round of their Community Orchard initiative, which is part of the wider Tree Chichester District scheme. Funding will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, and successful applicants need to have completed their planting projects before the end of March 2025.

Finally: -

As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
